Order Charadriiformes; Family Sternidae (Terns); Formerly in Family Laridae (Gulls & Terns); Scientific name: Hydroprogne caspia; Common name: Caspian Tern – Distribution in Australia: primarily a sea tern though also at home on large freshwater lakes sometime far inland, otherwise distributed on shores and beaches around Australia and Tasmania - Distribution outside Australia: breeds in Africa, Madagascar, North America and New Zealand; disperses widely through Eurasia.
