Order Charadriiformes; Family Scolopacidae (Snipes, Sandpipers and Phalaropes); Scientific name: Actitis hypoleucosCommon name: Common Sandpiper; Alternative common name: Eurasian Sandpiper – Distribution in Australia: Circum Australia, more common in the north, least common between western end of the Nullarbor Plain, through South Australian and Victorian coast to southern New South Wales - although its preferred habitat are bays and estuaries, it visits occasionally the inland bodies of water – Distribution outside Australia: breeds in Europe through northern and central Asia to Sakhalin and Japan; overwinters in sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, South-east Asia, Papua New Guinea and Australia.
