Order Gruiformes; Family Rallidae (Rails, Coots & allies); Scientific name: Porphyrio porphyrio; Common name: Purple Swamphen – at nest - Distribution in Australia: throughout Tasmania and present in all mainland states; absent in the arid interior and along the western coast between about Onslow and Jurien -Distribution outside Australia: numerous subspecies and races scattered throughout the world outside very cold and very dry areas.
