Description

Order Psittaciformes; Family Psittacidae (Parrots); Scientific name: Trichoglossus haematodus; Subspecies: moluccanus; Common name: Rainbow Lorikeet – Feeding on the nectar of a Palm Tree - Distribution in Australia: Subspecies moluccanus occurs naturally throughout eastern Queensland from northern tip of Cape York Peninsula southwards, throughout eastern New South Wales, and Victoria to south-eastern South Australia as far west as Eyre Peninsula, as well as in eastern Tasmania and Torres Strait Islands; introduced to Perth from where it is slowly spreading north, south and east through Swan Coastal Plain – Note: 10 individual birds were introduced to Perth in 1968; their population is now estimated at around 40 000 birds.
