Order Columbiformes; Family Columbidae (Pigeons & Doves) - Scientific name: Columba livia; Common name: Feral Pigeon; Alternative common names: Rock Pigeon, Rock Dove, Domestic Pigeon – Wild Rock Pigeons nest on rock ledges and cliffs. As sides of buildings and other structures provide similar habitat to rock ledges and cliff faces Feral Pigeons utilize them for roosting and nesting. - Distribution in Australia: found in all states and territories especially in and around cities (with an exception of Darwin) larger towns and in rural areas– Distribution outside Australia: original distribution of Wild Rock Pigeons are semi-arid areas of Europe, western Asia and North Africa; Feral Pigeon are nowadays found in most countries of the world. Note: The Feral Pigeons are descendants of Homing Pigeons that were brought to Australia by European settlers.
