Common Carp

Family Cyprinidae – Carps; Scientific name: Cyprinus carpio; Common name: Common Carp; Alternative common name: European Carp – Distribution in Australia: widespread throughout Murray-Darling River system in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia; also occurring in other river systems and in some costal lakes of New South Wales and Victoria and in Swan/Canning system of Western Australia – AN INTRODUCED SPECIES native to Eurasia introduced as a target, food fish for fisherman in late nineteenth century and now considered a major pest species endangering numerous native fishes, as well as health of entire rivers.
