Description
Family Dasyatidae – Stingreys; Scientific name: Himantura chaophrya; Common name: Freshwater Whipray – Distribution in Australia: a tropical ray inhabiting brackish estuaries and lower reaches of large tropical rivers, but penetrating far inland (such as to Geike Gorge, which is over 300 km upstream in the Fitzroy River); it is distributed between northern Pilbara and Kimberley Regions of Western Australia through the Top End of the Northern Territory, and in the estuaries and rivers of western Cape York Peninsula in the northern Queensland – Also: occurring in several river in souther New Guinea, Borneo and Thailand.
